Overview
Radical cystectomy is the removal of the entire bladder and nearby lymph nodes. In women, it often includes removal of the uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries, and part of the vagina.
The Procedure
This is a major surgery performed when cancer has invaded the muscle wall of the bladder. It offers the best chance of cure for invasive bladder cancer.
Urinary Diversion
Since the bladder is removed, a new way for urine to leave the body must be created. Options include an ileal conduit (urostomy bag) or a neobladder (new bladder made from intestine).
