Overview
Pelvic Organ Prolapse occurs when the muscles and tissues supporting the pelvic organs (the uterus, bladder, or rectum) become weak or loose. This allows one or more of the pelvic organs to drop or press into or out of the vagina.
Symptoms
- A sensation of a bulge or lump in the vagina.
- Pressure or heaviness in the pelvis.
- Difficulty emptying the bladder or bowels.
- Lower back pain.
Causes
Common causes include childbirth (especially vaginal delivery), aging and menopause (loss of estrogen), obesity, chronic coughing, or heavy lifting.
Treatment
Non-Surgical
Pelvic floor exercises or a vaginal pessary (a device inserted to support the organs) can be effective.
Surgery
Reconstructive surgery can repair the weakened tissues and restore organs to their natural position.
