Overview

Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI) is the unintentional loss of urine prompted by physical movement or activity — such as coughing, sneezing, running, or heavy lifting — that puts pressure (stress) on your bladder.

Symptoms

  • Leaking urine when coughing, sneezing, or laughing
  • Leakage during exercise or heavy lifting
  • Needing to wear pads for protection during daily activities

Causes

SUI occurs when the muscles and other tissues that support the urethra (pelvic floor muscles) and the muscles that control the release of urine (urinary sphincter) weaken. Common causes include childbirth, tissue trauma during pelvic surgery, and hormonal changes during menopause.

Treatment

Pelvic Floor Therapy

Exercises (Kegels) to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles are often the first line of defense.

Surgical Options

Procedures such as mid-urethral slings or bulking agents can provide long-term support and relief.
