Overview

Surgical mesh is sometimes used to treat pelvic organ prolapse or stress urinary incontinence. While often successful, complications can occur, such as mesh erosion (exposure) or chronic pain.

Symptoms

  • Vaginal bleeding or discharge
  • Pelvic pain or pain during intercourse
  • Recurrent urinary tract infections
  • Feeling the mesh material

Treatment

Surgical Removal

Partial or complete removal of the mesh may be necessary to resolve symptoms.

Reconstruction

After removal, reconstructive surgery using your own tissue may be performed to support the pelvic organs.
