Overview
Ureteral obstruction is a blockage in one or both of the tubes (ureters) that carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder. If left untreated, it can cause kidney damage.
Causes
Blockages can be caused by kidney stones, scar tissue (strictures), tumors, or external compression from other organs or masses.
Treatment
Stenting
A small tube (stent) is placed in the ureter to hold it open and allow urine to flow.
Surgery
Procedures to remove the blockage or repair the ureter (ureteroplasty) may be required for long-term solutions.
