Overview
Recurrent UTIs are defined as having two or more infections in six months, or three or more in a year. While common, they can be frustrating and painful, requiring a specialized approach to identify the underlying cause.
Symptoms
- Burning sensation when urinating
- Frequent urge to urinate
- Cloudy or strong-smelling urine
- Pelvic pain
Causes
Risk factors include sexual activity, menopause (due to hormonal changes), kidney stones, or anatomical abnormalities. Incomplete bladder emptying can also contribute.
Treatment
Prevention & Management
Low-dose antibiotics, vaginal estrogen therapy (for post-menopausal women), and lifestyle changes like increased hydration are key strategies.
Diagnostics
We may perform a cystoscopy or ultrasound to rule out structural issues.
