Overview
Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL) uses sound waves to break kidney stones into small pieces that can be passed in urine. It is ideal for older adults as it requires no incisions.
The Procedure
The patient lies on a cushion, and shock waves are targeted at the stone using X-ray or ultrasound guidance. The procedure takes about an hour and is usually done as an outpatient service.
