Overview
Urge incontinence, often associated with Overactive Bladder (OAB), is the involuntary loss of urine following a sudden, intense urge to urinate. It is a common condition in the elderly but is not a normal part of aging.
Symptoms
- Sudden, uncontrollable urge to urinate
- Frequent urination (more than 8 times a day)
- Waking up more than twice a night to urinate (Nocturia)
- Leaking urine before reaching the bathroom
Causes
Causes can include changes in bladder muscle function due to aging, neurological conditions (like stroke or Parkinson's), infection, or bladder outlet obstruction (like an enlarged prostate).
Treatment
Conservative Management
Bladder training, scheduled voiding, and fluid management are effective first steps.
Medical & Surgical
Medications to relax the bladder, Botox injections, or nerve stimulation (PTNS/Sacral Neuromodulation) can provide relief.
