Overview
Urinary retention is the inability to empty the bladder completely. In older men, this is often due to prostate enlargement (BPH). In older women, it can be due to prolapse or weak bladder muscles.
Causes
BPH, constipation, infection, nerve damage (from diabetes or stroke), and certain medications are common causes in the elderly.
Treatment
Immediate Relief
Catheterization to drain the bladder.
Long-Term
Treating the underlying cause (e.g., BPH medication or surgery) or teaching self-catheterization.
