Overview
An undescended testicle (cryptorchidism) is a testicle that hasn't moved into its proper position in the scrotum before birth. It's a common condition in premature baby boys.
Causes
The exact cause is unknown, but it's thought to be a combination of genetics, maternal health, and environmental factors that disrupt the hormones and physical changes that influence testicle development.
Treatment
Orchiopexy
If the testicle doesn't descend on its own within the first few months, a surgical procedure called orchiopexy is recommended. The surgeon moves the testicle into the scrotum and stitches it into place. This is usually done between 6 and 12 months of age.
Recovery
Orchiopexy is a safe and effective outpatient procedure. Recovery is usually quick, and the long-term outlook is excellent for fertility and testicular health.
