Overview
Antenatal hydronephrosis is the swelling of a kidney due to a build-up of urine, detected on a prenatal ultrasound. It is a common finding and often resolves on its own.
Causes
It can be caused by a blockage in the urinary tract (like PUJ obstruction) or reflux of urine from the bladder (VUR). In many cases, it is transient and not due to a significant problem.
Management
Postnatal Monitoring
After birth, the baby will have an ultrasound to check the kidneys. Antibiotics may be given to prevent infection.
Further Testing
If the swelling persists or is severe, further tests like a VCUG or MAG3 scan may be needed to determine if surgery is required.
