Overview
Neurogenic bladder refers to bladder dysfunction caused by neurological damage. In children, this is most commonly associated with spina bifida or spinal cord injuries.
Causes
Damage to the nerves that control the bladder can prevent it from storing or emptying urine correctly. This can lead to high bladder pressure and kidney damage.
Management
Catheterization
Clean Intermittent Catheterization (CIC) is often used to empty the bladder regularly and safely.
Medication
Medications can help relax the bladder and lower pressure.
Surgery
In some cases, bladder augmentation surgery may be needed to increase bladder capacity.
