Overview
UPJ obstruction is a blockage where the kidney meets the ureter. This prevents urine from draining properly, which can damage the kidney over time.
Symptoms
Symptoms may include abdominal or flank pain, nausea, vomiting, or blood in the urine. Some cases are found during prenatal ultrasounds.
Diagnosis
Ultrasound and nuclear medicine scans (like a MAG3 scan) are used to confirm the blockage and assess how well the kidney is functioning.
Treatment
Pyeloplasty
Surgery to remove the blockage and reconnect the ureter is the standard treatment. This can often be done using minimally invasive techniques.
