Overview
Vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) is a condition where urine flows backward from the bladder up the ureters to the kidneys. This increases the risk of kidney infections and damage.
Symptoms
The most common sign is a urinary tract infection (UTI), especially with a fever. Other signs may include bedwetting or high blood pressure.
Treatment
Antibiotics
Low-dose antibiotics may be used to prevent infections while waiting for the child to outgrow the condition.
Endoscopic Injection
A gel is injected into the ureter opening to prevent reflux. This is a minimally invasive option.
Surgery
Ureteral reimplantation surgery may be needed for severe cases to fix the connection between the ureter and bladder.
