Overview
A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection in any part of the urinary system. While more common in girls, they can affect any child and require prompt treatment to prevent complications.
Symptoms
Symptoms can vary by age. Infants may have fever, irritability, or poor feeding. Older children may complain of pain with urination, frequent urination, or abdominal pain.
Diagnosis
A urine sample is collected and tested for bacteria. In cases of recurrent UTIs, an ultrasound or other imaging may be used to check for abnormalities in the urinary tract.
Treatment
UTIs are treated with antibiotics. The choice and duration of treatment depend on the child's age and the severity of the infection. Encouraging good hydration and proper hygiene can help prevent future infections.
