Overview
Kidney stones are hard deposits made of minerals and salts that form inside your kidneys. They can affect any part of your urinary tract.
Symptoms
- Severe pain in the side and back
- Pain that radiates to the lower abdomen and groin
- Pink, red or brown urine
- Nausea and vomiting
Causes
Stones form when urine becomes concentrated, allowing minerals to crystallize and stick together. Diet, excess body weight, and some medical conditions are risk factors.
Treatment
Medical Therapy
Drinking water and taking pain relievers may be enough for small stones.
Procedures
Larger stones may require shock wave lithotripsy, ureteroscopy, or percutaneous nephrolithotomy.
