Overview
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is a common condition in men as they age. It involves the enlargement of the prostate gland, which can squeeze the urethra and cause urinary problems.
Symptoms
- Frequent or urgent need to urinate
- Weak urine stream
- Difficulty starting urination
- Dribbling at the end of urination
- Inability to completely empty the bladder
Diagnosis
Diagnosis typically involves a physical exam (DRE), urine tests, and sometimes a PSA blood test or ultrasound to rule out other conditions.
Treatment
Medications
Alpha-blockers or 5-alpha reductase inhibitors can help relax muscles or shrink the prostate.
Minimally Invasive Therapies
Procedures like Rezum or UroLift offer relief with fewer side effects than surgery.
Surgery
TURP or HoLEP may be recommended for more severe cases.
