Overview
Open prostatectomy is a surgery to remove the inner part of the prostate gland. It is typically performed when the prostate is too large to be removed safely via minimally invasive methods.
Indications
This procedure is recommended for men with very large prostates (usually >80-100 grams), bladder stones, or bladder diverticula that need repair at the same time.
The Procedure
An incision is made in the lower abdomen to access the prostate. The inner core of the prostate is removed, leaving the outer capsule intact. It is done under general or spinal anesthesia.
Recovery
Hospital stay is usually a few days. A catheter is needed for about a week. Full recovery takes about 4-6 weeks. It provides excellent long-term relief from symptoms.
