Overview
Screening for prostate cancer aims to find cancer early when it may be easier to treat. The two main tests used are the PSA blood test and the Digital Rectal Exam (DRE).
The Tests
PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen)
A blood test that measures the level of PSA, a protein produced by the prostate. Elevated levels can indicate cancer, BPH, or infection.
DRE (Digital Rectal Exam)
A physical exam where the doctor inserts a gloved, lubricated finger into the rectum to feel the prostate for lumps or hard areas.
Who Should Screen?
Men should discuss screening with their doctor starting at age 50. African men and those with a family history of prostate cancer should consider starting at age 40 or 45.
Understanding Results
Abnormal results do not always mean cancer. Further testing, such as an MRI or biopsy, may be needed to determine the cause.
