Overview
Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP) is a surgery used to treat urinary problems caused by an enlarged prostate. It involves removing parts of the prostate gland through the penis.
The Procedure
A resectoscope is inserted into the urethra. It has a light, valves for controlling irrigating fluid, and an electrical loop that cuts tissue and seals blood vessels. No external incisions are made.
Candidates
TURP is generally recommended for men with moderate to severe urinary problems that haven't responded to medication.
Recovery
Hospital stay is typically 1-2 days. A catheter is used for a few days. Strenuous activity should be avoided for 4-6 weeks to allow for healing.
