Overview
A hydrocele is a type of swelling in the scrotum that occurs when fluid collects in the thin sheath surrounding a testicle. It is common in newborns but can also occur in older boys and men.
Symptoms
- Painless swelling of one or both testicles
- Discomfort from the heaviness of a swollen scrotum
- Pain generally increases with the size of the inflammation
The Procedure
Hydrocelectomy is a surgery to remove the hydrocele. An incision is made in the scrotum or lower abdomen to drain the fluid and remove the sac. It is typically an outpatient procedure.
Recovery
Most men go home the same day. You may need to wear a scrotal support for a few days. Swelling may persist for a few weeks, but normal activities can usually be resumed within a week.
