Overview
Haematuria is the presence of blood in the urine. It can be visible (gross haematuria) or only seen under a microscope (microscopic haematuria). It is a symptom, not a disease itself, and requires investigation.
Common Causes
- Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
- Kidney or bladder stones
- Enlarged prostate (BPH)
- Kidney disease
- Trauma or injury
- Urological cancers
Diagnosis
Diagnostic tests may include urine analysis, blood tests, ultrasound, CT scans, or cystoscopy (visual inspection of the bladder).
Treatment
Treatment depends on the underlying cause. It may range from antibiotics for an infection to surgery for stones or other conditions.
