Overview
Ureteroneocystostomy is a surgery to reimplant the ureter (the tube from the kidney) into the bladder. It is done to fix the connection between the two.
Indications
This procedure is commonly used to treat vesicoureteral reflux (VUR), where urine flows backward from the bladder to the kidney, or to repair ureteral injuries or strictures near the bladder.
The Procedure
The ureter is detached from the bladder and reattached in a way that prevents reflux or bypasses a blockage. It can be done via open surgery, laparoscopy, or robotics.
Recovery
A catheter and sometimes a stent are used during the initial healing phase. Full recovery typically takes a few weeks, with follow-up imaging to ensure success.
